Mental Health Resources for Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs are a unique group, and they face distinct work and lifestyle challenges as a result of their work. While there are a wide-range of mental health resources available to the community at large, it can be more challenging to find resources and services designed specifically for entrepreneurs.  We hope you’ll be able to use this list to identify resources that will be helpful to you.

1. Mental health therapy with a therapist who specializes in working with entrepreneurs.

It can be a little tricky, but not impossible to find therapists who specialize in working with entrepreneurs.  Melissa Wesner, LCPC, the Founder of LifeSpring Counseling Services, for example, offers counseling services for entrepreneurs. At times, you’ll find therapists whose profiles mention that they also offer business coaching and consultation. These therapists are likely familiar with the unique needs and challenges of small business owners. Some of the most successful business owners I know are in therapy. And, if the reason you’re seeking therapy has nothing to do with the stressors of entrepreneurship, simply search for a therapist in your state who specializes in the specific issue you are wanting to work on.

2. Online or In-Person Brainspotting Intensives for Internal or External Business Stressors

If you’re a business owner who has never heard of Brainspotting, you are missing out!!! Brainspotting is a brain and body-based technique that helps people process information that is stored deeply in the brain and in the body. When it comes to the needs of entrepreneurs, Brainspotting can help business owners process stressors, work through internal challenges or blocks, and/or process external circumstances.  It can also help entrepreneurs access their creativity and/or feel more expansive. Brainspotting Intensives, while harder to find, can be done by someone who is a trained and experienced Brainspotting therapist or Brainspotting coach.

3. Support groups and community for entrepreneurs

A simple internet search will let you know there are any support groups for therapists in your area. If not, you can also seek support and community from other entrepreneurs by joining coaching programs for entrepreneurs or networking groups for entrepreneurs.  These groups aren’t designed specifically to help with mental health, but community and connection in general does help our overall mental health.

4. Health and Wellness Retreats for Entrepreneurs

Health and wellness retreats allow entrepreneurs to address their well-being from a holistic approach. They provide entrepreneurs with a break from their work and routines, opportunities to engage in wellness activities, and opportunities to build supportive relationships with other business owners. Retreats also provide business owners with opportunities to rest, sleep, and thus feel creative and invigorated again.

General mental health resources that entrepreneurs might also benefit from include:

988

988 is a 24/7 crisis hotline for people across the United States. Anyone in crisis can call or text this number to be connected with a trained professional. Even if you think you’ll never personally need this number, I encourage you to keep it handy in case you ever need to share this number with someone else.

Therapy directories

Therapy directories such as TherapyDen or PsychologyToday are great places to find therapists in your area. You can refine your search to find therapists with specific specialties and training.

Your insurance company

Your insurance company can explain your mental health benefits to you, and they can provide you with a list of local therapists who accept your insurance. Be sure to ask about your deductible and copay.

I hope this article offers some guidance as you consider mental health resources that might be a fit for you. Remember, your well-being impacts your business. When you focus on your well-being, you increase the likelihood of your business thriving too!
