Social Wellness for Solopreneurs: Confronting Loneliness in Entrepreneurial Ventures

At the start of the pandemic, many remote capable entrepreneurs were forced to begin working from home.  This was great for physical health and safety, but not so great for social and emotional well-being.  During the pandemic, many entrepreneurs (including therapists in private practice) reported increasing feelings of isolation and disconnection

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define social isolation as β€œthe lack of relationships with others and little to no social support or contact. It is associated with risk even if people don’t feel lonely.” For solopreneurs the risk of social isolation is quite high unless they live with friends or family or make concerted efforts to connect with others.

Worth emphasizing is the statement that social isolation comes with risks, even when someone doesn’t feel lonely. As humans, we are wired for connection, and when we are cut off from relationships with others, it takes a toll. Entrepreneurs who recognize that they are socially isolated can be intentional about forming connections and community.

Once an entrepreneur recognizes that they are lonely or socially isolated, they can be intentional about connecting with friends or family.  Entrepreneurs who crave support and community from other entrepreneurs can increase networking and outreach efforts, join online communities, coaching programs for business owners, or retreats for business owners.

Here at LifeSpring Counseling Services, we regularly organize gatherings for our team and networking events for local therapists. We have recently created the Greater Baltimore Area Clinician Community Membership for local therapists who want to get together on a monthly basis to do something fun. We’ve also organized a wellness-based business retreat for entrepreneurs. If you’re a go-getter who loves hosting and community-building, you can create similar opportunities for the entrepreneurs in your community.  If you’re not the hosting type, you can join programs like the ones we’ve created, so you can be a part of a community that supports you.

Entrepreneurship can be an exciting venture, and it doesn’t have to be a lonely one. If you are an entrepreneur who is feeling lonely, isolated, or disconnected, know that there are other entrepreneurs (and communities for entrepreneurs) who would love for you to connect! Knowing that you are socially isolated isn’t enough. Action is required to reduce the risks, and I hope you’ll take steps to connect with others and improve your well-being too!
