Mindfulness in Action: How Entrepreneurs Can Incorporate Mindfulness Concepts Into Their Day

Busy entrepreneurs who are interested in mindfulness might be concerned about having one more thing to do each day. Mindfulness, however, is a practice that we can integrate into our day. It’s not a task that requires us to set aside additional time.  In fact, applying mindfulness concepts and practices can help us to be more calm, present, and focused as we go about our day. 

According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, Mindfulness is “the awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, without judgment.”  Let's take a look at how busy entrepreneurs can utilize these concepts throughout the day. 

Mindfulness Concept #1: Staying in the present moment

Business owners have a million different things that they’re thinking about. By staying in the present moment, business owners are able to focus on the task at hand.  In order to stay present, we have to redirect ourselves back to the present moment when we recognize that we’ve started thinking about other things. Some people like to remind themselves to “be where their feet are.” 

Mindfulness Concept #2: Practice Non-Judgment

As a business owner, you might negatively judge yourself, others, tasks, or even your circumstances.  When we judge, it can lead to escalated emotions, avoidance, and other undesired responses.  Imagine what it would look like if you didn’t judge yourself as an entrepreneur. What would it be like if you didn’t judge the people you work with? What would it be like if you didn’t judge the task at hand or your circumstances as a business owner? Chances are, practicing non-judgment would feel a lot better, and it would allow you to approach circumstances with a more open stance. 

Mindfulness Concept #3:  Paying Attention on Purpose

It’s easy to be inattentive when you’re busy and have a lot on your mind.  Consider how often you get lost in thought, find yourself daydreaming, find that you’re not paying attention to someone who is talking to you, find yourself looking for something you misplaced, or recognize that you’re not even sure how you got from point A to point B. When this happens, you’re not fully present, and you’ve missed out on information that might have been helpful. 

Paying attention on purpose requires effort and intention, and it requires us to be fully present in the moment.  One way that we can pay attention on purpose is by using our 5 senses to notice what we are seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, and tasting in a given moment.  When we use our 5 senses to take in information, our experiences become a lot richer.  Imagine what you might notice if you were regularly paying attention to how you are thinking, feeling, and acting as a business owner.  Imagine how much additional information you would be taking in if you were extra intentional about paying attention to others around you as well. 

If you look back at the 3 mindfulness concepts that were just introduced, you’ll notice that none of them require you to take extra time out of your day. Each and every one of them can be integrated into your day to help you be more focused, present, and aware. Remember, mindfulness requires practice in order for it to become a regular part of how you approach your day. And, if ever you struggle to implement these concepts, remember to be kind to yourself and practice non-judgment too!
