LifeSpring’s Approach to Mindfulness-Based Counseling
When dealing with depression and trauma, it’s easy to get caught up in thoughts, memories, or regrets about the past. With all three of these, we can experience fear or uncertainty about the future. We may even make negative predictions about how future events will unfold. Mindfulness skills can help you stay grounded in the present where you feel safer, calmer, and more in control. Mindfulness can also teach us how to approach specific situations with openness and curiosity, rather than with fear or judgment. Mindfulness skills can help us embrace the present moment, practice gratitude, and fully experience life using our 5 senses.
What is Holding You Back from Starting Mindfulness-Based Counseling?
Many people say they feel guilty for spending time, energy, or resources on themselves. At LifeSpring, we believe that you are worthy of your own love, care, and compassion and that practicing self-care is not selfish. If you’re like many of the people we work with, you spend a great deal of time tending to your job and/or your family. We regularly remind people that taking care of yourself will positively impact your other roles as well.
So many people tell us that they just don’t have the time. The great thing about mindfulness is that it is an integrated approach. This means that utilizing mindfulness skills doesn’t require you to take additional time out of your day to use it. Mindfulness skills can be integrated and incorporated into your day with ease. If your time is limited, the great news is that mindfulness skills can be learned with in-person or online therapy and that the use of mindfulness skills outside of session do not require any additional time. Consider: what is your peace of mind, presence, and ability to feel fulfilled worth to you?
Even if the definition of mindfulness mentioned above is new to you, it’s possible that you have already been exposed to mindfulness concepts. If you have ever attended a yoga class, you may have heard the instructor talk about being present or being aware without judging. With mindfulness-based counseling, you can learn more about mindfulness concepts and strategies to help with your specific needs. You can use these strategies to complement other practices (such as yoga or meditation) that you already engage in.
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.”
