Mastering Your Mindset for Mental Health and Business
Whether you’re talking to a coach or a counselor, both will agree that your mindset matters. We may use different language to discuss this topic, but the way you think and talk to yourself will impact your business and your mental health and emotional well-being. If you’re an entrepreneur who knows that you get caught up in unhelpful ways of thinking, you’re in the right spot!
Coaches often talk about mindset. Therapists often talk about thoughts. We’re talking about the same thing while using different language. Either way, we’re about to explore how your thoughts impact your mental health and business.
Our thoughts impact how we feel.
If you believe negative things about yourself, your capabilities, or your business, you’re not going to feel great. It’s important to note that just because you believe something, doesn’t mean it’s true. Just because you think something, doesn’t mean it’s true. I know it can be hard to wrap your head around the idea that your brain would tell you things that aren’t true, but that is in fact the case. If you recognize that you’re being particularly critical of yourself or others, know that it’s time to fact-check your thoughts. Ask yourself, “Is this thought helpful, accurate, or true?” You can also ask yourself if the limiting beliefs that are showing up are related to messages you’ve received repeatedly while growing up.
Our thoughts and feelings influence how we act.
If you’re thinking negative or self-critical thoughts that make you feel bad, those thoughts and feelings will inevitably influence your actions. For example, imagine that you are telling yourself that you’ll never be able to make your business succeed. This thought will make you feel bad, and it might even influence you to not try, to give up, or to reach for the ice cream. When we recognize that we’re not feeling like our best selves and that our thinking is in the gutter, it’s important to “catch” that type of thinking and to change it into something that is more helpful and accurate. We can also work on acting in ways that are helpful and supportive, even when we don’t feel like it. Sometimes taking productive and healthy action steps result in us feeling better. Example, getting a shower even when you don’t feel like it makes you feel better afterward.
The status of our mental health impacts how we think, feel, and act.
Every living, breathing person in the world has mental health, and sometimes our mental health is in good shape and sometimes it’s not. Sometimes we don’t feel great because our mental health status is not great. When our emotional or mental health isn’t doing so well, our thoughts tend to take a turn for the worst! This is important to remember because this means that our negative thoughts and beliefs are sometimes symptoms of mental health problems (not the truth about us, our abilities, or circumstances). If you find that you’ve been experiencing a lot of negative thoughts or that you haven’t been feeling like your best self, that’s a great time to schedule a mental health check up. You can talk to your PCP about the possibility of medication or you can schedule a counseling appointment. Medications can improve your mood while your therapist provides you with helpful information and strategies for managing negative thoughts, feelings, and responses.
As you can see, your mindset is related to your mental health. It can also be related to your family of origin experiences. At the end of the day, however, mastering your mindset can improve your mental well-being and your business outcomes. You can work with a mindset coach to help you with limiting beliefs that are impacting your business or with a therapist if those limiting beliefs are related to your mental health. Having an outside observer who is able to recognize the presence of limiting beliefs can be invaluable. If you’ve read any of my other articles on entrepreneurship and well-being, then you know that your well-being as an entrepreneur impacts your business which is just one of the reasons that it’s so important to take good care of yourself!
