8 Key Things Your Therapist Wants You to Know

Have you ever participated in therapy before? You might not realize this, but there are a number of things that therapists want you to know. We asked four of our mental health therapists in Maryland to share the key things they’d like their clients to know.

Going to therapy will not “fix” you because there is nothing to “fix.” You have all of the resources you need to succeed in your therapy goals. Allow yourself to be your biggest resource.”

“While getting yourself to the gym doors is the hardest part, you build your strength through consistency and dedication within it. Going to therapy is like going to the gym for your mind. While getting to therapy is the hardest part, you build your inner strength through consistency and dedication in session.”

~ Sophie Koch, LGPC

Therapy is not one size fits all - each therapist has their own unique style, approach, personality, etc. If you find yourself not connecting with your therapist, it is okay to find a new one! It’s best to try a new therapist rather than move on from trying therapy all together.”

Therapy is not always linear. Sometimes you may leave a session feeling great, and sometimes you may leave a session feeling not so great - both feelings are often part of the healing journey of therapy. The good news is that your therapist is there to walk the journey, including the ups and the downs, with you.”

~ Michaela Langley, LGPC

A therapist can provide other resources or referrals that may be beneficial for your specific needs, such as support groups or a psychiatrist.”

Therapy is a collaborative process, so we want to hear your feedback about what works and what doesn’t so we can better help you.”

~ Chelsea Cowden, LGPC

“If your current therapist is not a good fit for you then you should be aware that they can refer you out to another therapist that may be a good fit for you.”

“Believe in yourself! You can make your goals happen if you really want. Put in the effort and you'll see the outcome you desire, and you’ll feel proud of yourself for making this decision.”

~ Sabah Khalid, LGPC

Now that you’ve heard from our therapists, we’d love to hear from you!  Let us know if there were any points that stood out to you or that surprised you!  Participating in therapy can be an exciting opportunity to grow, gain insight, and get connected to other helpful resources!  It does require effort and commitment on your part, but as you’ve read above, we definitely believe it’s worth it!

Thinking about starting therapy? Here are some resources that we hope will help!
