Finding an Anxiety Therapist in Baltimore: What to Look For!
Finding a therapist can be tricky! There are different credentials, age ranges, locations, specialities, and training that therapists list on their profiles. Even being a therapist, it is often difficult sometimes to differentiate profiles! Anxiety can range from annoying to debilitating to one’s life, this level of uncertainty in not knowing who is the right fit or match can add another level to the therapist search. Here are some things I would consider when looking for a therapist!
Some things to consider when looking for a therapist in Baltimore, MD
Credentials
Therapists can range from master’s level clinicians to doctoral level therapists. LCPC or LGPC are therapists in the counseling profession, LMSW or LCSW-S are clinicians in the social work field. Some organizations also employ PhD or MD clinicians who can do testing or prescribe medication. All of which can provide therapy!
Target age range
Therapists often describe their target population — this is important in looking for a therapist who is trained and has experience working some age groups. For example, it would be encouraged to find someone who works with kids or if someone has knowledge working with college students if you fit in that age group.
Location
Telehealth has become a very popular option for therapy in the past few years! Some may prefer in person for anxiety treatment or want the flexibility of no travel or commute time.
Specialities
Therapists will list their specialities or area of interest they have expertise or training in! It is strongly recommended if you want to work through anxiety to look for the mention of anxiety in a therapist’s profile.
Training
There are many, many different training sessions for anxiety. These range from a more cognitive based approach (looking at how we think and conceptualize the world, people, etc. around us) to more body based approaches (how bodies handle, remember, and react to the world, people, etc. around us). It is recommended to find a evidenced based approach that has shown success in treating anxiety. Some of these include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Therapy as cognitive based approaches. Some popular body based approaches are Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing, and mindfulness based techniques.
Sometimes it takes one look to find a therapist who is a great fit for working with anxiety, while other times it takes a few tries. Please use these categories as a starting place when looking for services on profiles or during a first therapy appointment. If ever you try working with a therapist, and it’s not a good fit, you can always communicate that honestly, and search for a provider who is a better fit. Many therapists also offer free 15 minute consult calls to have you make a decision.
