Brainspotting is a powerful therapeutic approach that has been gaining popularity in recent years due to its ability to help clients overcome trauma, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Brainspotting Intensives are becoming increasingly popular for people who want to do a lot of deep work in a short period of time. There are a limited number of practices that offer this service, so it may be difficult to find.

The good news is that even if you are having a difficult time finding a provider in your home state, you can always travel in order to participate in a Brainspotting Intensive. This is a generally common practice for things like EMDR Intensives or Couples Intensives.  In this article, we’ll outline the steps you can follow if you want to participate in a Brainspotting Intensive.

Find a Brainspotting therapist who offers Intensives

The first step in participating in a Brainspotting Intensive when you live out of state is to find a Brainspotting therapist that offers an intensive. The Brainspotting website has a directory of certified Brainspotting therapists, although you can also do a basic internet search for Brainspotting Intensives to get this information.  Once you have a list of Brainspotting therapists who offer Intensives, reach out to them and ask your questions.

Choose the provider and intensive that’s right for you

It’s important that you feel comfortable with your provider, so be sure to select a provider whose profile and experience resonates with you.  While there are a limited number of Brainspotting Intensives out there, the Intensives offered by different providers do vary. At LifeSpring Counseling Services, for example, we offer 1 and 3 day-long Brainspotting Intensives. There are other mental health therapists, however, that offer two half-day intensives. You’ll want to choose the provider and intensive that seems like the best fit for you and your needs. If you’re not sure, you can always give these practices a call to get the information you need to make a decision.

Consider factors like the location of the intensive, the cost of travel, and the duration of the intensive. It's also important to factor in any time you'll need for travel and for settling in before the intensive begins.

Plan your travel and allow room for rest

Once you've chosen the intensive you want to attend, it's time to start planning your trip. You’ll need to plan for your lodging and travel time.  Generally speaking, Brainspotting therapists encourage you to make time to rest and relax after your Intensive. If you’re traveling to an interesting location, you may be eager to explore.  Just know that you will want to give yourself some down time in case you’re feeling tired after the Intensive.

Prepare for the Intensive

Finally, it's important to prepare yourself for the intensive. This may include setting goals for what you want to achieve and getting clear on the topics that you would like to brainspot. At our in-person office, I make sure to provide water, tissues, and anything else that people might need to feel comfortable throughout the day.

Participating in a Brainspotting Intensive when you live out of state may seem like a challenge, but with a little bit of planning and organization, it's possible to make it happen. By finding a Brainspotting therapist in your area, choosing the right intensive, planning your travel, and preparing yourself mentally and emotionally, you can get the most out of your Brainspotting Intensive experience. A Brainspotting Intensive is an exciting opportunity to do really important work in an abbreviated period of time!
