4 Helpful Resources You Can Use When Experiencing a Mental Health Crisis in Baltimore County, MD

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, and you are in Baltimore County, MD here are a few things that you can do. The resource you choose will depend on your specific situation. The most important thing, however, is that you reach out for help when you need it.

Call 988

988 is the new number for the Suicide and Crisis Hotline.  You can call or text 24 hours a day, no matter where you are located in the United States.  When you call or text this number, you’ll be able to talk with a trained professional.

Go to a psychiatric urgent care

You’re likely familiar with urgent care for physical health, but did you know that there are urgent care clinics for mental health too?  In fact, there are several in the Greater Baltimore area including the psychiatric urgent care through Sheppard Pratt in Towson and the Behavioral Health Emergency Services with the University of Maryland. Some urgent care centers are only open during regular business hours.  If you need immediate assistance and it’s after hours, you might find one of the other resources on this page more helpful.

Go to the nearest emergency room

Many emergency rooms in Baltimore County have Crisis Intervention Teams who can evaluate you once you’ve checked into the emergency department.  They’ll ask you some questions to help determine how they can help you.  Based on the information you share, the mental health professionals in the emergency department can help determine if you need to be admitted to the hospital, or if there is another more fitting outpatient referral for you.

Call 911

If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, and you need immediate attention, call 911. 911 may send police officers and/or paramedics out to meet you.  From there, it’s possible that they will take you to the emergency department for an evaluation.

Even if you do not currently need these resources, it can be helpful to know about them. If you’re the person who thinks you’ll never need these resources, I encourage you to keep them handy. You never know when someone around you will find these resources helpful.  It’s easy to panic if you’ve never received training on how to respond while someone is experiencing a mental health crisis. If you can help someone pick up the phone to use one of these resources, your knowledge and assistance will be invaluable.
