Quotes to Help You Keep Your Anxiety in Check

While there are a number of really great coping strategies that can help us manage our anxiety and worry, sometimes a quote sticks with us, making it even easier to remember key concepts. If you deal with anxiety, you just might relate to some of the quotes below.  Pick the one that resonates with you, and keep it handy when you need a gentle reminder.

Worry is a waste of imagination
— Walt Disney

When we engage in worry, our mind can be very creative at inventing worst-case scenarios that jack up our anxiety.  What would happen if we redirected that creative mental energy into a more productive outlet?  Consider the other things that you might imagine if your thoughts weren’t consumed by worry.

Worry is like a rocking chair: it gives you
something to do but never gets you anywhere

In talking to so many individuals about anxiety and worry, it’s clear that we sometimes believe that worrying is productive.  After all, if we’re prepared for the worst, we won’t be as surprised when something happens, or if we’re anticipating the worst-case scenario, we’ll be prepared for “when the next shoe drops.” Despite these underlying beliefs that sometimes get exposed, the reality is that the majority of our worry is not helpful.  It does give us something to do, but there’s nothing productive or helpful that comes out of it. Instead, we just keep spinning our wheels, feeling tense and anxious as a result.

Worrying is like paying a debt you don’t owe
— Mark Twain

When we get caught up in worrying, we’re spending time and energy thinking about something that may never come to pass.  When we fail to realize this, our worry steals our contentment in the moment and fills us with anxiety.  How much is your peace of mind worth?  Stay in the present, and know that when and if something unfortunate does happen, you’ll handle it.

Be where your feet are

If, like many, your anxious thoughts lead you to getting caught up in your head, this quote is a reminder to come back to the present moment.  Our anxious thoughts can take us into the future where we’re imagining all of these “what if” scenarios or worst case scenarios.  Being where your feet are means bringing yourself back to the present where you do have control. When was the last time you felt your feet firmly planted on the ground?

If worry and anxiety have been a regular part of your life, consider the quote that stood out to you the most.  Take one and use it as the reminder you need to manage some aspect of your anxiety. Do you have another anxiety quote that you love?  If so, be sure to send it our way!
