Working Through Life Transitions with Children, Teens, and Adults in Maryland

If you are reading this page, chances are, something about the term “life transition” caught your eye. Whether you are adjusting to living in a different place, adjusting to a relationship ending, a new relationship, or changes in your job, life transitions and changes are difficult.

When we adjust to a new change, it can be off-putting and create a sense of loss or grief over the prior state or way we were living. We can grieve the loss of the relationship after a breakup, the loss of our childhood as we enter adulthood, or mourn the sense of identity or social community we had with a prior job. When life causes us to transition and change directions, we can lose touch with ourselves, others, and the world around us. If you find yourself struggling to adjust to a recent change or transition, you came to the right place!

Common Responses to Life Transitions Can Include…

  • Anxiety (Generalized, specific, and/or social)

  • Depression

  • Struggle to find a sense of routine

  • Changes in appetite

  • Restlessness

  • Irritability

  • Overwhelming feelings of worry

  • Feeling a sense of loss or grief

  • Burnout

  • Panic Attacks

  • Fatigue/insomnia

  • Feelings of hopelessness and/or helplessness

LifeSpring’s Approach to Counseling Difficulties with Life Transitions

When you make an appointment at LifeSpring, you and your therapist will discuss what challenges you have been facing and how they led you to seek help. Together, you will discuss the transition, what it means to you, and how it is impacting your everyday life. You will likely receive a symptom screening form, identifying the experiences you have been noticing. This will help your therapist understand the transition and how it is impacting your daily functioning. Together, you will identify a plan for the work you will do to help you adjust and grow with this recent life change. In creating this plan, you will create goals and identify methods to obtain these goals.

Therapy can offer a sense of stability and familiarity that is often desired in times of large changes. In therapy, you are with a licensed clinician who is knowledgeable about life transitions, the ways they can impact us, and ways to regain a sense of control of your life. Through therapy, you can learn new coping mechanisms, identify resources, and develop a plan to refind yourself amongst change. If you do not have a safe space to discuss recent life changes and how they have impacted you, a LifeSpring therapist eagerly awaits to get to know you and join you on this journey.

What is Holding You Back from Seeking Help in Managing Recent Transitions in Your Life?

It’s not unusual to be nervous or hesitant about entering therapy for a difficult change or transition. The signs of struggling with a transition, like overwhelm or grief, can get in the way of people calling to get help. Therapy is an opportunity for you to take ownership of your life in a healthy way. Whether you are dealing with the impact of a recent job change, relationship ending, a dream changing, relocation, or more. It’s important for you to know that adaptation and growth is possible!

Adjustment and transitions don’t have to isolate you or keep you from feeling supported as you adapt. At LifeSpring, we recognize that adjustment and transitions are difficult, so we strive to work beside you during this time of change.
