Choosing your internship site is an important decision. I wish I could tell you that I followed the advice below when I was in college, but unfortunately, the recommendations below have come from lived experience!  Here’s hoping that the information below will provide you the guidance you need to make thoughtful decisions about internship opportunities that have the potential to greatly impact your future.

Choosing an internship site is an important decision. The experience you get and the site you choose have the potential to significantly impact your future directions, career opportunities, and skills. You want to choose a site that will give you opportunities that are in alignment with your interests and areas of desired growth.

Here are the top reasons to consider doing your internship at LifeSpring Counseling Services

1. You’ll get quality supervision

It’s not uncommon for interns or new graduates to talk about not getting quality supervision. After all, some agencies and their employees are overloaded, leaving employees to do the best that they can. At LifeSpring, we believe in providing quality supervision that is provided on a consistent basis. Our employees have given great feedback about the supervision offered, so know that our therapists agree! We’ve even created a workbook to help new therapists track their clinical hours, non-clinical hours, and supervision hours.

2. You’ll work with a team that really cares about their work and their clients

At LifeSpring, our staff members truly care about their clients and the work that they do. Our staff members find meaning and purpose in their work, and our work is more than an opportunity to get paid.

3. You’ll get substantial experience providing individual therapy to clients dealing with depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, and life transitions

These are the reasons that many of our clients seek therapy. If you are interested in helping clients navigate these specific situations, know that we can give you plenty of experience. Our office has even created a journal to help clients make the most of therapy. This is an internship where you will get to work with clients. You won’t be making anyone’s coffee. 😉

4. You’ll get to see what it’s like to work at a group practice

Our internship is a great option for people who are interested in private practice or group practice. You’ll have opportunities to learn about billing, marketing, insurance, and accepting payment for services. These are not skills that we learn in grad school, so it’s helpful to learn them now while you have supportive supervision and guidance.

5. Interns who work well with our team and our clients will have future employment opportunities at our office

LifeSpring Counseling Services regularly hires provisionally licensed counselors and social workers. If you and your supervisor believe that LifeSpring Counseling Services is a good fit for you, we would be happy to invite you to move forward with our official hiring process.

6. You’ll get opportunities for growth and professional development

Interns at LifeSpring Counseling Services have opportunities to grow and do professional development. We offer training opportunities, supervision, and access to peer consultation. You may even get the opportunity to share on our podcast!

7. You’ll get experience doing therapy in-person and online

Like many practices, our office has been offering online therapy to clients. At this time, we are now offering in-person counseling services and telehealth. As an intern, you’ll have the opportunity to provide online and in-person counseling.

By now, I hope you’re considering the type of internship experience that you’re looking for. The internship site, supervision received, and population served will all have big impacts on your future opportunities. This isn’t something to stress over. It’s simply something to think about, so you can approach this decision in a thoughtful way.
