Recognizing you need help and doing what is best for you are the most important steps in your healing journey. I recognize the effort you’re putting in to find the right therapist. Your therapist should be someone with whom you feel safe and comfortable talking to, someone you feel you can trust to be an ally with you on this mental health journey. Hi there! My name is Ash Westgate (they/them/theirs) and I am a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) in Maryland. I’m excited to meet you!

If you are searching for a therapist who specializes in conversations around identity, and focuses on all of what makes you you, then you’re in the right place. We, as humans, never exist in a vacuum, and our identities, situations we live in, and the broader communities and society we live in all play a part in who we are, and what we go through in this life.

I specialize in conversations around identity, as who we present to this world can often add to our well-being, as well as our stressors. I use a trauma-informed, multicultural, feminist, and LGBTQIA+ lens to provide a safe, open space to explore and talk about all intersectional identities, with a specific interest in gender issues and conversations around chronic illness and disability. I also specialize in mood and anxiety disorders, grief, and trauma diagnoses or trauma symptoms, and how these conditions can deeply impact our self worth, and how they may be understood by others based on our visible or invisible identities.

It is most important to me that my clients feel safe, heard, and understood in our space, and that the work we do together is collaborative and helps you achieve your goals and feel better, whatever that looks like for you.

If you are someone who likes to use every tool at their disposal to solve an issue, then we might be a good fit. When it comes to therapy, I use an eclectic approach to therapy, such as using art or music in therapy, practicing meditation, and focusing back on the body, understanding and unpacking different emotions, and understanding how different parts of ourselves interact with each other to influence our perspectives on the world, our strengths, and our issues. If your goal is to play an active role in your treatment, and have a say in what your treatment looks like and goes while also appreciating a collaborative effort, then we may work very well together.

I applaud you for taking the first steps to find a therapist. I’m here to help if you’re ready to get started.

Outside of the office…

Outside of the therapy space, I am a very creative person and love to knit and crochet, play piano, and play kalimba. I believe there are so many ways to connect to ourselves, and allowing for creative expression is one way to connect the mind and body and feel proud of what I’ve created. Any kind of art or craft doesn’t need to be good; it just needs to exist. I also play D&D, and am getting trained on how to use it in a group therapy setting (be on the lookout for that soon!). I am a big believer in bibliotherapy, or the use of books and reading in therapy, so if you like to read or don’t mind some reading homework, we would work well together!

Educational Background

I graduated from Towson University with my Bachelors of Science in Psychology with a minor in Women and Gender Studies, and graduated from the Honors College. I graduated with my Masters in Arts for Counseling Psychology from Towson University. I am a Certified Advanced Grief Counseling Specialist (CAGCS).
