Are you feeling lost, overwhelmed, unsure how to make sense of what is occurring? Are you having emotions and experiences that are unusual to you? Do you feel like a stranger to yourself?

Maybe you are going through a major change in life like moving, a new school, or a career change. Or you are experiencing unexpected changes like a traumatic event, losing a loved one, a sharp shift in a close relationship, or a diagnosis. Perhaps you are embracing a significant change, coming out, transitioning, or engaging in new relational structures. Likely, it is a whirlwind combination of many of these. Whatever it may be, you do not have to figure it all out alone.

Hi, I am Courtney Gray (they/them/theirs). I am a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor in the state of Maryland. I counsel teens and adults (ages 12 and up) on navigating life transitions, anxiety, mood, grief, trauma, and identity. The core of my work is supporting an individual in making sense of themself and finding their home in this world.

Let’s be real, reaching out for help can be daunting and can leave us in a vulnerable position. Yet, we all need help at times and it takes courage to seek out that support. As a counselor, I am dedicated to providing therapy that leaves you feeling understood, respected, and empowered. I particularly enjoy working with individuals who are engaging with therapy for the first time and those who have struggled finding an affirming counselor in the past. I foster a safe space free of stigma for you to understand your mental health and how it interconnects with all aspects of your life. Through structured collaboration we will work to identify core concerns and how these concerns can be handled to aid you in living a wholesome life.

Much of my studies and practices focus on how we create meaning in our lives through relationships with self, peers, significant others, family, community, faith, social roles, and society at large. At times internal struggles, relational conflicts, unfavorable social conditions, and societal discrimination can weigh us down. I aim to support you in understanding how you find purpose, how to amplify your strengths, and how to allow your authentic self to resonate. When opportunity allows, I like to blend elements of art therapy into traditional talk therapy to encourage reflection and expression from multiple perspectives. If you are a creative, we can get creative.

I value working with individuals of various cultural backgrounds. I am dedicated to providing services that are trauma-informed, person-centered, and inclusive. I provide affirming care for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and have lived experience as a non-binary person. When you are ready to make the next step for your mental wellbeing, I am here to take it with you.

“Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.”

Courtney’s Work

Outside of the office…

When I am not in therapist mode, I can often be found enjoying quality time with my cat, friends and family. I am an avid baker and spent a few years working in professional bakeries. I also enjoy painting, writing, running, live music, and being immersed in nature. And I am likely in the midst of a rewatch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls, or some season of Survivor.

Educational Background

I received a BS in Cognitive Science and a BA in English from the University of Delaware (Go Blue Hens!). Following graduation I moved to Philadelphia and spent years working as a career and college counselor supporting high schoolers in Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey with navigating their final years of high school and the transition into young adulthood. My experiences and interest in psychology lead me to pursuing a MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Graduate Certificate in Addictions Counseling from Saint Joseph’s University (Go Red Hawks!). During my master’s program I completed a year long counseling internship where I worked with adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, grief, postpartum depression, and complex post traumatic stress disorder.
